Great point on vol vs invol. Separate comments weren’t working so posting here. I really appreciate this article, it brings up some great points. I’m a little confused though. In the section referring to “meaningful calculation at the individual level” right before the FAQs, how does 1/(1+0) = 200%?

Great question, we don’t take involuntary numbers into our monthly/yearly calculation. As the approach behind that is that involuntary are asked to resigned due to unsatisfactory performance or compliance issue. So our calculations are based on voluntary numbers.

Is it a valid practice to split turnover up by termination type/reason? I realize this is ubiquitous, but it seems problematic. Consider a case where a company has 10 employees at the beginning of January. During the month, two employees are terminated. One leaves for a new job (voluntary), and the other is terminated for insubordination (involuntary). When calculating voluntary turnover, the employee who termed for insubordination is usually still included in the headcount of employees at the beginning of the month, and their termination affects the average headcount. To put it simply, it seems like involuntary terminations are affecting the voluntary turnover metric. This seems odd. Am I missing something?
